L‘année dernière, à cette époque, nous avions discuté avec Steve de l‘album Kylie Christmas et à l‘occasion de cette réédition, nous avons décidé de le faire à nouveau. Voyons un peu comment ça se passe dans les backstages de deux concerts sold out au Royal Albert Hall.
A nouveau bonjour ! Il y a un an, nous vous avions contacté pour une interview sur l’album Kylie Christmas. On savait que l’on allait recommencer… Comment l’idée d’une réédition est arrivée ?
Re bonjour ! Merci de me contacter à nouveau ! Etant donné que l’album de Noël a été très bien reçu, et que l’on savait que l’on serait probablement à nouveau invités au Royal Albert Hall, c’était inévitable pour nous d’ajouter quelques titres à l’album. C’est tellement amusant que l’on ne pouvait pas résister au fait de retourner en studio.
Quand avez-vous commencé les enregistrements et comment avez-vous fait pour garder cela secret ? Personne ne le savait avant que Kylie n’en parle dans une interview en Novembre.
On les a enregistré début Septembre, une nouvelle fois aux incroyables Angel Studios et Sarm Music Village Studios avec les mêmes musiciens que les derniers albums.
Une des meilleures surprises a été le duo avec Mika. Quand on les a vu sur scène ensemble on a vraiment pensé qu’ils étaient nés et qu’ils avaient passé leurs vies à Disneyland… C’était rempli d’énergie et de joie. Comment l’enregistrement s’est passé ?
Ca avait l’air d’être la chanson la plus naturelle pour eux pour un duo comme ils sont de très bons amis et c’est un titre très fun. Travailler avec Mika est génial, et tout s’est mis en place naturellement et très rapidement pour cet album de Noël.
Parlons des concerts… Premièrement laissez nous vous dire que c’était GENIAL. Comment travaillez-vous pour des événements comme ça ?
Merci ! L’année dernière personne ne savait à quoi s’attendre et on a été ravis des réactions qu’on a reçu donc cette année c’était un vrai challenge à relever car il fallait répondre aux attentes tout en changeant des éléments pour être différent sans trop être différent car cela devient une tradition. J’appelle déjà ce show « The Kylie Christmas Proms » dans le sens où il commence et se termine toujours par le même titre mais le rythme au milieu est différent et nous pouvons ajouter quelques classiques à l’intérieur. Et bien sûr nous avons eu des invités incroyables pour les deux années, trouver des bonnes collaborations est toujours très amusant.
Nous allons être honnêtes, quand on a vu la setlist en premier on s’est dit «hmm c’est toujours pareil » et puis quand on a entendu les nouveaux arrangements et les remixes ont a été complètement époustouflées, et quelques jours plus tard, nous sommes toujours sans voix. Vous avez fait un travail fantastique. Comment avez-vous pensé à cela ? Est-ce que Kylie est arrivée en vous disant « J’aimerai ce titre un peu plus lent, celui-ci un peu plus disco » ?
C’est toujours un process collaboratif entre Kylie, William et moi, mais cette année on a eu beaucoup plus de costumes et accessoires et le concert avait plus de parties donc c’était plus comme une tournée qu’un simple show. En ce qui concerne les versions, elles sont influencées par la mise en scène ainsi que la présence de l’orchestre et du choeur. Cela nous a donné la possibilité de revisiter des choses comme par exemple la version burlesque de Locomotion et la version Abbey Road Session de Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, qui n’avait jamais été chantée avec ce line-up.
Comment choisissez-vous les invités ?
Pour ce spectacle, John Grant a fait un duo avec Kylie un peu plus tôt cette année au Royal Albert Hall et on savait qu’il serait parfait sur Confide. Olly a été contacté par William Baker et a sauté sur l’occasion et Katherine a chanté aux 90 ans de la Reine avec Kylie donc l’idée est venue d’ici. Le truc c’est qu’ils sont tous de très grands fans et on a eu de la chance qu’ils soient disponibles pour les deux soirs.
Combien de temps cela prend pour réaliser le concert et les répétitions ?
On a commencé celui-ci en Septembre et les répétitions juste une semaine avant. Tout est échelonné : on commence d’abord avec Kylie et son groupe, ensuite on ajoute les cuivres, puis les cordes, le choeur et enfin les danseurs qui ont répétés séparément et qui nous rejoignent donc les jours qui précèdent le concert sont souvent très intenses mais tellement amusants !
On a aussi été très impressionnées par les lumières. Comment est-ce que cela est réalisé ? Est-ce que vous avez une sorte de présentation 3D pour savoir à quoi cela va ressembler avant le concert ?
C’est Rob Sinclair et Ali Pike – ce sont des génies et ils sont aux répétitions avec nous pour toute la préparation sur les titres, donc beaucoup de travail est fait à l’avance et nous leur faisons vraiment confiance. Au final c’est juste magnifique mais j’ai particulièrement adoré ce que l’on appelle la « Narnia Section », qui inclue une nouvelle composition que j’ai faite spécialement pour le concert et qui précède Come Into My World. Et bien sûr on a eu des guests incroyables pour ces deux concerts.
Est-ce que c’est plus difficile de travailler avec l’orchestre que le groupe classique ?
Pas du tout, j’ai eu assez de chance pour avoir travaillé avec des orchestres tout au long de ma carrière et le plus important, j’ai eu le brillant Cliff Masterson qui a co-arrangé les titres et s’est occupé de l’orchestre donc c’est très naturel pour moi. Cliff et moi avons récemment fait un concert avec The Ulster Orchestra à Belfast qui interprétait des classiques de la musique dance et qui était incroyable, tellement incroyable que le prochain qui se déroulera en Octobre est déjà presque sold out !
Quel a été votre moment préféré durant le concert ?
Il y a en a tellement mais la performance originale de Confide In Me avec l’orchestre et la beauté du duo avec John Grant m’a fait fondre en larmes. Voir également Katherine en immersion dans quelque chose de si différent pour elle et la voir aussi bien se débrouiller était génial. Mais globalement la joie et la chaleur du public ainsi que la voix à couper le souffle et la présence de Kylie sur scène ont été sans précédent. Elle ne cesse de m’étonner et je ne suis pas sûr que les gens réalisent tout le travail qui est fait derrière.
Qui est le plus stressé le jour du concert ?
Il n’y a jamais assez de temps mais ça peut aussi être productif. Notre marge de manoeuvre est mince car on fait ça depuis un petit moment maintenant donc tout est dans la préparation en gardant tout ça amusant et brillant. On travaille avec les meilleurs dans l’industrie et tout le monde connait son travail et le rend sans problème. C’est une grande famille et personne ne veut laisser tomber l’autre.
Petite question – Est-ce que le concert du Royal Albert Hall va devenir un classique chaque année maintenant ?
Ca dépend d’eux, mais j’espère vraiment.
On n’arrête pas de parler de travail… Est-ce que vous avez déjà fait vos cadeaux de Noël ?
Je fais tout ça cette semaine ! Merci Amazon Prime ! Avec l’enregistrement et le mix de l’album, la promo télévisée et les préparations et répétitions pour le show, tout a été fou mais j’ai encore un concert cette semaine avec une artiste incroyable avec qui je travaille qui s’appelle Harriet (http://www.harrietsmusic.com) et ensuite c’est terminé, je fais l’arbre de Noël et je regarde Love Actually à la télévision !
Et dernière question – On vous avait posé la même l’année dernière. N’êtes-vous pas VRAIMENT fatigué de Noël maintenant ?
Ah ! Ca reste une très bonne question ! Je ne le suis pas – aux côtés de Kylie, Cliff et j’ai produit le troisième album de Susan Boyle cette année qui n’était pas des titres de Noël mais des chansons d’hiver et on a commencé cela en avril. Et puis Noël vous donne la possibilité de faire pleins de choses que vous ne pourriez pas faire le reste de l’année comme par exemple travailler avec des orchestres et des choeurs donc je suis plus qu’heureux d’être connu pour ça.

Last year around this time, we talked to Steve about Kylie Christmas, and as the re-issue came, we decided to reach to him again. Not only his skills are on point, he is also the sweetest person! Let‘s have a look at how a Xmas album and two sold out gigs in RAH get together….
Hello again! It’s been a year since we reached to you asking for an interview on Kylie Christmas. Little did we know we would have a reason to do it again… How did you guys come up with the re-issue idea?
Hi again! Thanks for asking me back! As the original album was so well received and we knew we were lucky enough to be invited back to the Royal Albert Hall it seemed inevitable we would record some additional songs to add to the album for this year. Plus its such a fun process we couldn’t resist going back into the studio.
When did you start recording and how on earth did you manage to keep it secret? The fans had no clue until Kylie mentioned it somewhen in November.
We recorded them early September again at the incredible Angel Studios and Sarm Music Village Studios with the same musicians from last years album.
One of the best surprises was a duet with Mika. When we saw them on stage together, we honestly felt like they both were born and had spend their whole lives in Disneyland… so much energy and joy. How did the recording with these two go?
It seemed like the most natural song for them to duet on as they are great friends and its a really fun song. Mika is so wonderful to work with so as with everything on the Christmas album it all came together very quickly and naturally.
Let’s move on to the concerts… First of all, let us say it was B O M B. How do you guys put together setlist for events like these?
Thank you! Last year no-one knew what to expect and we were blown away by the reaction so this year it was a challenge to live up to the expectations and change enough to be different but not too much as its almost tradition already. I call this show The Kylie Christmas Proms in the way it will always start and end with the same songs but the bits in the middle can move around and we can add some different classics in there. Plus of course we have had incredible guests for both years so finding great collaborations is always part of the fun.
We are gonna be honest, when we saw the setlist first, we were like “meh, still the same” but then the new arrangements and remixes totally blown us away, a few days later and we’re still speechless. You did an awesome job. How do you think about this? Does Kylie come up to you like “I want this song slowed down a little, add some disco to this one”?
Its always a collaborative process between Kylie, William and myself but this year we had a lot more costumes and props to accommodate and the show had more sections so it was more like a tour show than a concert. As far as versions are concerned again its influenced by the staging plus with the full orchestra and choir there it gives us chance to revisit things like the burlesque version of “Locomotion” and the Abbey Road version of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” which have never been performed with that line up.
How did you pick the special guests?
For this show , John Grant duetted with Kylie earlier this year at the Royal Albert Hall and we knew he would be so perfect for “Confide” , Olly was asked by William Baker and jumped at the chance and Katherine performed at the Queens 90th Birthday Celebration with Kylie so the idea came from there. The trick is they are all huge fans and luckily for us were all available for both nights.
How long does it take to put the whole show together and rehearse ?
We started on this one in September and rehearsals were just over a week. We stagger them so its starts off purely with Kylie and her band/BV’s, then we add the brass section, then the string section , then the choir and finally the dancers who have been rehearsing separately join us so the final days are pretty busy in the rehearsal room but so much fun!
We were also blown away by the light show – again. How on Earth is this done ? Do you guys get like a 3D presentation how its gonna look like before the show ?
That’s Rob Sinclair and Ali Pike – they are absolute geniuses and are in rehearsals with us for the whole time pre programming to the songs so a lot of prep is done beforehand and we trust them implicitly. It all looked amazing but I particularly loved what we call the Narnia section which included a new composition I wrote especially for the show which prequels “Come Into My World”. in there. Plus of course we have had incredible guests for both years so finding great collaborations is always part of the fun.
Is it harder to work with an orchestra than the classic band ?
Not at all, I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with orchestra’s throughout my career and for most of that I’ve had the brilliant Cliff Masterson co-arranging and conducting so its very natural for me. Cliff and I recently did a show with The Ulster Orchestra in Belfast performing dance music classics which was incredible , so much so they’ve announced the next one for next October and its nearly sold out already!
What was your favorite moment during the show ?
There are so many but performing the original album arrangement of “Confide In Me” with full orchestra and the majestic beauty of John Grant’s duet reduced me to tears. Also watching Katherine totally immersed in something so different for her and absolutely smashing it was amazing. But overall the pure joy and warmth from the audience and the truly breathtaking vocals and command of the stage by Kylie were unprecedented. She never ceases to amaze me and I’m not sure people realise how much hard work goes into making something look that effortless.
Who is stressing out the most on the day of the show ?
There is never enough time but that can be productive too. We run a really tight ship as we’ve all been doing this for a while now so its all about preparation and keeping it all fun and light. We work with the best in the business and everyone knows their job and delivers without fail. Its a big family and nobody wants to let anyone else down.
Sneaky question – is RAH gonna be a thing every year now?
That‘s up to them but I really hope so.
We keep on talking about work… do you have your shopping ready?
I’m doing it all this week ! Thank God for Amazon Prime! From recording/mixing the album , the TV promo and prep/rehearsals for the show its been crazy but I have one more show this week with an amazing artist I work with called Harriet (http://www.harrietsmusic.com) then its feet up , tree up and Love Actually on the TV!
And last question – we asked you the same one last year. Aren’t you all REALLY sick of Christmas by now?
Ha! That’s still an excellent question! I’m really not – alongside Kylie, Cliff and I produced our third album for Susan Boyle this year which was not Christmas songs but Winter themed and we started that in April. Also Christmas gives you licence to do so many things you wouldn’t be allowed to any other time of year including working with incredible orchestras and choirs so I’m more than happy to be known for that.
