Margot, qui travaille à l‘Arts Centre Melbourne et qui a travaillé sur l‘exposition Kylie On Stage a accepté de répondre à nos questions, afin d‘en savoir un peu plus sur l‘organisation et l‘origine du projet.
Alors… Comment l’exposition Kylie On Stage est arrivée ?
L’idée pour l’exposition Kylie On stage a grandi grâce au récent don de Kylie pour l’Arts Centre de Melbourne, Performing Arts Collection. Ce don inclus des costumes de la tournée X en 2008 et Aphrodite les Folies (2011) et cet ajout à la collection a vraiment renforcé la représentation des concerts de Kylie. Les costumes sont fantastiques et on voulait vraiment les exposer et cette idée a commencé a grandir autour d’une exposition qui mettrait en avant les costumes de scène de Kylie et qui refléterait le développement de sa personne sur scène au travers des années.
Comment la première idée d’une exposition sur Kylie est venue ?
La première exposition, en 2005, était une réponse aux centaines de dons de costumes de Kylie qui montrent les différents aspects de sa carrière, incluant les costumes qu’elle a porté dans les clips vidéos, les tournées, les performances, photo shoots et red carpet.
Combien de temps cela a-t-il pris ? De la première pensée à l’ouverture des portes un peu plus tôt cette année ?
J’ai commencé à développer les thèmes et le contenu pour l’exposition il y a à peu près un an et commencé à travailler sur l’exposition avec la designer Anna Tregloan un peu plus tôt cette année. J’ai également eu l’opportunité de voyager à Londres et de rencontrer l’équipe de Kylie, et d’apprendre plus sur le monde des tournées internationales, comment cela marchait. J’ai eu le soutien d’une bonne équipe au Arts Centre Melbourne et on a travaillé intensément pendant bien trois ou quatre mois avant l’installation.
Comment les costumes ont été choisi ? C’était un choix personnel de Kylie ou y-a-t’il eu d’autres aspects ? Et où étaient-ils avant ? Tous les fans pensent qu’ils étaient dans les placards de Kylie…
Les costumes pour l’exposition ont été choisi pour refléter comment Kylie s’est développé sur scène au fil des années. On souhaitait vraiment inclure les designers avec lesquels elle a travaillé à différents moments de sa carrière. Il y avait certains looks qui devaient juste être intégrés, comme le costume de Showgirl de Kylie Showgirl: The Greatest Hits tour (2005) et Kylie Showgirl Homecoming tour (2006) mais avec une telle collection, on a été capable de retourner tout au début de sa carrière avec le Disco in Dreams tour (1989). Les costumes ont été stockés à Londres et Melbourne et étaient très bien conservés quand ils sont tous arrivés au Arts Centre Melbourne dans des conditions incroyables.
Comment est-ce de travailler sur un projet comme ça tous les jours ? Est-ce que vous ressentez toujours la même atmosphère quand vous passez devant ?
Je ne suis jamais fatiguée de regarder les costumes de Kylie et je vais souvent voir l’exposition dans la journée, chaque jour. Il y a des vidéos de Kylie qui porte les costumes sur scène qui sont diffusés et c’est bien de pouvoir les voir en action et de les regarder de plus près. Je tiens à dire que marcher à travers l’exposition tous les jours quand je vais au travail est particulièrement intense pour commencer la journée !
Est-ce que vous avez un costume préféré ?
Je ne pourrais pas choisir un favori. Ils sont tous adorables. Mais quand j’y pense, j’ai vu beaucoup de visiteurs qui restent scotchés devant le Kyborg qui ouvrait le concert KylieFever2002. Vous ne voyez pas des costumes comme ça tous les jours !
Kylie parlait d’une structure spéciale qui a été construite pour l’un des costumes… C’est absolument incroyable que cette robe nécessite autant d’attention et je ne pense pas que les fans peuvent imaginer comment cela fonctionne…
Oui, on a utilisé des structures pour certains costumes dont le corset en PVC que Kylie porte pour la tournée Rhythm Of Love (1991) car le matériel est devenu vraiment fragile au fil des années. A la base on devait l’exposer avec le short qui correspond sur un mannequin mais le short était très détérioré et ne pouvait pas être touché. Après avoir eu le costume examiné par un conservateur, la décision a été prise d’afficher seulement le corset sur un support qui a été construit spécialement pour ça afin de le protéger lors de l’exposition. Les pièces sont maintenant stables mais en raison de la nature du PVC, nous continuons à surveiller ce costume.
Est-ce qu’il y a des souvenirs que nous pouvons acheter ?
Nous avons une brochure qui est disponible en échange d’une pièce en or, mais il y a eu beaucoup d’intérêt pour du merchandising, on essaie de travailler dessus en ce moment !
Est-ce qu’il y a une chance que l’on puisse voir cette exposition de l’autre côté de la planète ? Si non, que vont devenir les costumes par la suite ?
Ce serait génial de voir une tournée pour cette exposition et il y a eu beaucoup d’intérêt de la part d’autres endroits du monde. On regarde les possibilités pour faire une tournée et cela a l’air possible mais rien n’a encore été bloqué pour l’instant. Margot, who is working at the Arts Centre Melbourne and who worked on Kylie On Stage exhibition took the time to answer to our questions about the organization and origin of the project.
So… how did this whole Kylie on Stage thing happen?
The idea for the Kylie on Stage exhibition grew out of Kylie’s most recent donation to Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection. This donation included costumes from the X2008 tour and the Aphrodite Les Folies tour (2011) and their addition to the collection really strengthened the representation of Kylie’s concert tours. The costumes are so amazing that we really wanted to get them on display and the idea started to grow about an exhibition that would focus purely on Kylie’s tours and reflect the development of her stage persona over time.
How did you guys come up with the first idea of a Kylie exhibition?
The first exhibition, back in 2005, was in response to Kylie’s donation of hundreds of costumes that spanned many aspects of her career, including costumes worn in video clips, tours, one-off performances, photo shoots and on the red carpet.
How long did the process take? From the first thought to actually opening the door earlier this month?
I started developing the themes and content for the exhibition about a year ago and started working with the exhibition designer Anna Tregloan early this year. Once I had the opportunity to travel to London and meet with Kylie’s team and learn more about the world of international touring, it all started to come together. I had the support of a great team behind me here at Arts Centre Melbourne and we worked pretty intensely for a good three or four months in the lead up to the install.
How did the costumes get picked? Was it Kylie’s personal choice or some other aspects? And actually, where were they before? All the fans picture them in Kylie’s closet…
The costumes for the exhibition were chosen to reflect the way Kylie’s stage persona has developed over time. We were keen to include designers that she had worked with at different times throughout her career. There were some celebrated looks that just had to be included, like the showgirl costumes from Kylie Showgirl: The Greatest Hits tour (2005) and Kylie Showgirl Homecoming tour (2006) but with such a complete collection to draw on, we were able to go right back to the beginning and create a visual journey of Kylie’s costume highlights starting with the Disco in Dreams tour (1989). The costumes had been stored in London and Melbourne and were clearly treasured as they all arrived at Arts Centre Melbourne in amazing condition.
How does it feel to be literally working with something like this every day? Do you still get to absorb some of its atmosphere even though you walk past every day?
I never get tired of looking at Kylie’s costumes and I find myself making frequent trips into the exhibition space every day. There is footage of Kylie wearing every costume that’s on display and it’s great to see them in action on stage and then be able to appreciate them up close. I have to say that walking through the exhibition every morning on my way to the office is a particularly uplifting way to start the day!
Do you have any favourite costume of yours?
I couldn’t choose a favourite. They are all very lovable. Having said that, I’ve seen a lot of visitors struck by the Kyborg from the opening act of the KylieFever2002 tour. You don’t see costumes like that every day!
Kylie was talking about a special structure that had to be constructed for one… It’s absolutely unbelievable that a dress needs so much of special care and I don’t think fans can imagine how this whole process works…
Yes, we had some concerns about the PVC corset Kylie wore in the Rhythm of Love tour (1991) because the material has become very fragile over time. We had initially aimed to display the corset with its matching shorts on a Kylie torso but the shorts had really deteriorated and didn’t like being handled. After having the costume assessed and treated by a Conservator, the decision was made to only display the corset on a purpose built support that would basically cushion it during display and storage. Both pieces are now stable, but due to the nature of PVC we will keep monitoring this costume.
Are there any souvenirs to purchase at the exhibition?
At this stage we have a room brochure available for a gold coin donation, but there has been a lot of interest in merchandise for the exhibition and we’re looking into this at the moment.
Sneaky question – any chance we could get to see this on the other side of the planet later? If not, what’s gonna happen with the costumes next?
It would be lovely to see the exhibition tour and there has been a lot of interest from your neck of the woods. We’re looking into the prospect of touring at the moment and its looking positive but nothings locked in at this stage.
